A modern anaerobic installation for processing biodegradable waste is being built in Burgas

The construction of the first of its kind in the country anaerobic installation for processing of separately collected biodegradable waste has started in Burgas. It will provide additional capacity for the waste collection and processing process. The project for its construction is being implemented in partnership between the three municipalities of Burgas, Pomorie and Nessebar.

The symbolic fstart of the construction activities was attended by the Mayor of Burgas Dimitar Nikolov, the Mayor of Pomorie Ivan Alexiev, the Deputy Mayor of Burgas Vesna Baltina, representatives of the Municipality of Nessebar and the company that designs and builds the facility.

The installation will have some of the most modern devices and systems for carrying out waste processing. It will work on the principle of a natural process in which the decomposition of waste is carried out by special bacteria in the complete absence of oxygen. As a result of this process, compost and methane will be produced, from which electricity and heat will be produced.

The capacity of the installation is for processing 30,652 tons of biodegradable waste per year. It will have 8 bioreactors, a biogas system, a percola system, gas storage and systems, as well as mobile equipment. The composting plant will have 6 tunnels.

With the commissioning of the anaerobic system, the life of the new cell of the regional landfill will be extended as a result of the reduction of the amount of waste left for disposal in it. On the other hand, its construction will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.

The anaerobic installation is being built in the Northern Industrial Zone at Krayezerna Street in Burgas, in the area of the wastewater treatment plant. It is implemented under Project GBG16M1OP002-2.004-0002 "Construction of an anaerobic installation for separately collected biodegradable waste on the territory of Burgas region". It is implemented with a grant and own funding from the three municipalities, which is distributed among the partners as follows: Municipality of Burgas - 54.61%; Municipality of Nessebar - 33.38%; Municipality of Pomorie - 12.01%.
